General Motors has opened its new global headquarters in downtown Detroit, establishing a consolidated office presence at Hudson’s Detroit on Woodward Avenue. The move shifts the company’s primary headquarters from the Renaissance Center, which has served that role since the mid-1990s, and places GM’s leadership offices within a smaller, centrally located space in the city’s heart.

The new headquarters occupies approximately 200,000 square feet across multiple floors of the Hudson’s Detroit office building, part of a mixed-use development near Campus Martius. GM has described the location as a return to Woodward Avenue, where the company maintained offices in the early years following its founding in 1908. The space includes executive offices, collaborative work areas, and public-facing areas used to display vehicles and selected artifacts.

GM leadership has framed the relocation as a response to the limitations of its former headquarters. Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra described the Renaissance Center as too large and dispersed to support close collaboration, noting that the new headquarters is intended to bring teams into closer proximity.

The company has emphasized consolidation rather than expansion. GM has positioned the move as a reconfiguration of existing operations, concentrating leadership functions within a smaller footprint rather than increasing its overall presence in the region.

The transition also marks a shift in GM’s long-term relationship with the Renaissance Center. Company executives have publicly indicated that GM plans to sell the complex, though no timeline, buyer or transaction details have been disclosed. GM has not outlined how the sale process will proceed or how remaining operations at the site will be transitioned or reassigned.

Design details for the new headquarters emphasize flexibility. Reporting on the interior notes that the headquarters spans several upper floors and includes a publicly accessible lobby space. Interior layouts prioritize open collaboration areas alongside traditional offices, while common areas incorporate references to GM’s design and engineering legacy. A ground-level lobby includes vehicle displays and curated elements intended to connect the headquarters to the surrounding downtown environment.

Several details related to the headquarters move were not disclosed. GM has not released figures on employee headcount, identified which departments will be permanently based in the space, or outlined financial terms such as lease structure, cost or public incentives. GM has also not linked the new headquarters to any changes in remote or hybrid work policies.

GM did not provide further detail on how the headquarters transition will be implemented beyond the initial opening.
